Blues, R&B, funk, jazz and gospel permeate his music, keeping him in demand as a performer. Hailing from Buffalo, Calire discovered his love for music from the get-go.
A founding member of New York’s 1960’s cult success, The Ravens, his musical/life journey led him to a gig touring with America, riding that “Horse With No Name” before settling in Ojai to raise a family.
• Like his co-leader in this quartet setting, John Marx is a legend in his own right.
Born and raised in East Baltimore, he began singing in church at the age of 6. He played drums from ages10 to 15, and then took up gui- tar to better accompany his singing.
Over the years, Marx has found himself either on stage or in a recording studio with Albert Collins, Lowell Fulsom, The Drifters, Gladys Knight, George Benson, The Dells, Luther Tuck- er, Lee Oskar, Gabor Szabo, The Platters, The Coasters, Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmy Smith, Jessie Ed Davis, Lightning Hopkins, Sleepy John Estes and many others.
• Drummer extraordinaire, Mario Calire has played the Bowlful on several occasions, start- ing as a teenager. When he was barely a tod- dler, his dad, Jimmy, would strap him to a kit and make him play for hours. As a young man,
Mario continued to excel in his craft and en- joyed years-long stints touring and recording with The Wall owers and Ozomatli.
• Craig Thomas is an accomplished singer, multi-instrumentalist — including tenor, alto, soprano and baritone saxophones, clarinet, ute, and guitar — and songwriter with The R&B Bombers, Jim Messina, the Craig Thomas Trio, Craig Thomas & Bluetopia and, when he’s not on tour with one of those groups, locally with the Calire-Marx Organ Quartet.
He has performed on records and onstage with Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau, Johnny Mathis, Les McCann, Olivia Newton-John, Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Jermaine Jackson, Clarence Clem- mons of the E Street Band, Tom Jones, Domi- no Affect, and on several movie soundtracks: “Death Warrant” starring Jean-Claude van Damme, “Maid To Order” starring Ali Sheedy and “Steal Big, Steal Little” starring Andy Garcia. He’s also written songs for Mike Love, Jim Messina, the R&B Bombers and smooth jazz groups Domino Affect and 206.
Thomas’s style is strong rhythm and blues with obvious rock and jazz in uences. He is able to shout out traditional blues, whisper a soft me- lodic ballad, or slide through an R&B tune with equal skill and an underlying soulful feeling.
