Thomas Fire – How’s your health? by Dr. BJ Adrezin
The recent Thomas fire was officially the most devastating fire in California history. All of us were exposed to especially hazardous air quality during, and well after this devastating event. People have been inhaling chemicals and other harmful particulate matter in the air for hundreds, if not thousands of miles.
There has been much written on the Internet about how to protect our lungs from the effects of long period smoke inhalation from wildfires.
Anyone still experiencing discomfort should definitely seek attention from a health practitioner. As a Naturopathic Medical Doctor and Boku Master Formulator,
I will be working in Ojai, in the near future, to evaluate people and help get their health back on track.
At this time, it would be smart to look at the most effective ways to support your body and to protect yourself from the harmful side effects of toxic chemicals and poisons that were inhaled in the smokey air.
The liver is our bodies largest internal organ in the body, as well as the main organ of detoxification. Contrary to popular belief, the liver is the most important organ to support, in order to help fight the free radical damage from forest-fire smoke inhalation. It is also the only organ that can regenerate itself after being damaged.
There are many ways we can support the liver to safely detoxify. The important thing is to implement a liver supportive diet protocol immediately. In order to give your body a chance to detox itself from the lingering harmful health effects of the fire and resulting stress. This article will focus on whole foods and other substances to support the liver:
• Drink pure water. It sounds easy, but most people don’t drink enough pure water. These purifiers remove contaminants like arsenic, lead, chlorine and other volatile oxidative compounds from the water by using a proprietary filtration system.
• Eat high fiber foods. Many chemicals that the liver detoxifies are fat soluble. The body has a special way to get these chemicals safely out of the body. The liver does this by dissolving these chemicals in the bile it produces. Normally the liver makes bile and it is stored in the gallbladder. The purpose of bile is to help us digest food that is higher in fat. Most people don’t realize that the bile is also the dumping ground the liver uses to dispose of fat soluble chemicals. When we eat a food high in fat, our gallbladder emits the bile into the small intestine. The side benefit is that this “toxic bile” can leave the body with a bowel movement. A key factor is that there needs to be fiber containing foods in your intestine, in order to bind to the bile as you evacuate your bowels. If there is not enough fiber, your body reluctantly reabsorbs this “toxic bile,” which could be dangerous.
• Eat garlic, onions, kale and broccoli – These cruciferous vegetables and bulbs provide key nutritional building blocks, that the liver uses as a catalyst to detoxify. All green leafy vegetables are excellent sources and essential for cleansing the liver!
• Enjoy dark berries – Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, etc. All have an incredibly high O.R.A.C value and are wonderful sources of antioxidants and phytonutrients, that support detoxification in your liver and throughout your body.
• Drink matcha tea – Green tea has been extensively researched to support body detoxification. Matcha is the young whole tea leaf tips that are dried and powdered. Matcha has an alkalizing effect on the body and is also highly anti-inflammatory.
• One of the most powerful Liver cleansing superfoods are medicinal mushrooms. Mushrooms like Shiitake, Maitake, Turkey Tail, Chaga and Reishi. In particular, Reishi Mushroom has been scientifically proven to speed the liver cell regeneration process and is incredibly effective in safely and powerfully detoxing the liver.
