Cocklin Stable After New Year's Eve Crash

At approximately 1:46 p.m. Monday, Britteny Cocklin, 21, was driving southbound on West Ojai Avenue near Hermosa Road in a white Volvo when she struck a tree after leaving the roadway. Cocklin was traveling with her 2-and-one-half-month-old son, Skyler. A female passerby, who refused to divulge her name, pulled over and began administering CPR on Cocklin. A doctor and nurse traveling in the same direction stopped and took over the rescue effort before firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene. Cocklin was taken to Ojai Valley Community Hospital for initial treatment and later transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. Thursday, she was conscious and her condition was improving, according to Senior Deputy Jim Popp. Popp said Cocklin remembers nothing about the incident.
The baby, which has been released to the custody of a family member, was in a rear child’s safety seat at the time of the accident, and appeared to be unharmed, according to Ojai Police Chief Bruce Norris.
There is no evidence to believe alcohol or drugs are a factor in the cause of this accident, according to investigators, who are, instead, considering a possible medical condition as a contributing factor.
Popp has asked anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call him at the Ojai Police Station at 646-1414.
