Julie Hamann spent her childhood dancing in her father's ballet studio.
Her father, a Navy veteran, used his G.I. Bill benefits to study ballet at New York's Carnegie Hall before opening his own dance studio in New Orleans.
“He was from a really rural area, went into the Navy and saw ballet for the first time,” explained Hamann. “And he called his girlfriend back home and said, 'I know what I'm doing when I get out of the Navy.'”
Hamann learned ballet from her father and added jazz, tap and song to her repertoire as a musical theater student at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
Later, she worked as a touring performer for Disney — her performances took her across the United States and Japan.
