Family shelter poised for its 26th year

Sending more than half its mattresses to Hurricane Harvey evacuees in Texas last summer didn't scuttle the Ojai Valley Family Shelter's (OVFS) plans to open its winter homeless shelters.
The shelters will be open on schedule starting Dec. 1.
“Community support was so wonderful that we replaced the mattresses with 125 brand new ones,” said Rick Raine, an OVFS administrator. “The support was absolutely mind-boggling.”
Upon seeing the destruction Harvey wrought on the Houston area in August, Raine decided to put the mattresses, that were in storage at the time, to good use.
He worked with U.S. Navy officials at Pt. Mugu to deliver 100 mattresses to East Texas.
OVFS is poised to open its doors to the homeless for a 26th season of providing a warm, safe place to spend the night.
