NHS grad now UH hoop star
by Misty Volaski
A junior at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, Christen Roper
is the definition of a dedicated hoopster.
Daughter of Bob and Debbie Roper of Ojai, she holds five records
at her alma mater, Nordhoff, including most rebounds and blocks.
Roper was an All-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation)
selection in 1997, 1998, and 1999, helping to lead the Lady Rangers
to two Frontier League championships in 1997 and 1999. She also
contributed much to her squad as they went to the CIF playoffs
in 1996, 1997, and 1999.
Roper continued her tradition of blocking to UH Manoa, already
breaking the school's career block shot record. The record helped
her gain the No. 2 position in the NCAA for blocked shots.
Roper was named Most Valuable Player of the Year for the Wahine,
and recently was named Western Athletic Conference Player of
the Week.
However, she can do more than just block. In a recent game against
Cleveland State, Roper combined with teammate Natasja Allen for
42 points, with Roper scoring 19 points in the first half alone,
bringing her team to the win, 76-55.
Dad Bob Roper (Ventura County Fire Chief) said of his daughter,
"At a 6-foot-5-inch playing post, she is an intimidating
force."
