Lady 'Cats cage
Laguna Blanca
by Misty Volaski
After Cate creamed Villanova 68-15, the varsity Lady Wildcats
were hungry for a win against Laguna Blanca.
Cate was all over the court, keeping the ball in Villanova territory
most of the game. Top Cate scorer Hwang not only had 23 points,
but five three-pointers, as well.
Katie Jones was able to score eight points in the game, but the
rest of the squad was rendered helpless against the much-stronger
Cate team.
However, thanks to sophomores Katie Parziale and Lauren Van Keulen,
the Wildcats were able to achieve the win against Laguna Blanca.
Van Keulen dominated, with 14 points overall, including two three-pointers,
and five steals, while senior Jones sank in six points. However
it was Parziale, with her first triple double - 11 points, 12
rebounds, 12 steals and five assists - who stood out.
The win brought the Lady Wildcats to 5-1 league record. Despite
the loss to Cate, they may still be in the running for first
place.
The boys' varsity, with a 5-0 record, is already first in league.
With players like Captain Cole Gibson and Djadji Daffe, the Wildcats'
chances at a Condor League title are good. Gibson averages 15
points a game, while Daffe is the leading rebounder in the entire
Southern Section of CIF (California Interscholastic Federation),
with an average of 18.5 rebounds a game. Ryan Kirby, another
of Villanova's top scorers "is doing a great job running
the team. He keeps us organized," coach Matt Dunn said.
Wednesday's game against Thacher proved the boys' skill. Daffe
had 26 points, while teammates Clark Tevis and Gibson had 16
and 14 points, respectively. When the Toads began to catch up
in the fourth quarter, Tevis netted "a couple of crucial,
real big three-pointers," Dunn said.
The Wildcats beat the Toads, 70-60. "We're just continuing
to get better," Dunn added.
