Toads lacrosse league champs
by Misty Volaski
It would have been enough for Thacher's boys' varsity lacrosse
team to win first place in the Condor League. But the boys, coached
by Jack Crawford, didn't just take the league -- they took every
single game, as well.
Jan. 19 marked one of Thacher's largest wins of the season, with
the Toads netting 17 goals to RL.S's (Robert Louis Stevenson)
six.
Thacher's Charlie Munzig scored big, with four goals, while teammates
Bobby Kellogg, Duncan Winecoff and James Everett each added three
goals of their own. Junior Tyler Caldwell scored twice and had
four assists. Jose Estrada was Thacher's defensive powerhouse,
keeping the ball out of Thacher's net 11 times.
The Toads' game against Windward was no different, finding Thacher
on top again, 12-5. Everett led Thacher, scoring a third of their
goals and adding an assist. Munzig, Winecoff and Kellogg teamed
up for six goals between them, while goalie Estrada was 6 for
11 in saves.
The game was one of teamwork - the Toads had a slew of assists
from Cladwell, Winecoff, Dan Bartlett, Robert Cereda and Emery
Mitchem.
With the league title in plain sight, the boys focused in on
their offense to beat Cate, 6-4, and RLS, 13-4.
Against Cate, midfielder Leigh Salem and captain Munzig added
two goals each to go along with senior Everett and junior Troy
Pollet's combined two goals. Munzig and Everett contributed two
assists, as well.
The prep school's win Friday vs. RLS guaranteed them the league
chmpionship. They will play Cate today at 3:30 p.m. at Cate,
and then Peninsula on Friday at Thacher, at 1:30 p.m.
