Obituaries for the week ending February 22, 2002


Harmony Kaufer

Harmony Kaufer, 53, of Ojai died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002. She was born Karen Sue Frey Sept. 18, 1948, in Lindsay, Calif., and grew up in Exeter, Calif., where she attended Exeter Union High School.
After working in the clerical department of Westinghouse Corporation, she moved to Ojai with her son and daughter in 1975. From the late '70s through the mid-'80s she taught ceramics and crafts at Happy Valley School. During that time she met her husband, Lanny Kaufer, whom she married in 1983.
Mrs. Kaufer became a licensed massage therapist in 1989 and worked in the spa at Wheeler Hot Springs where she became spa manager, serving in that capacity until 1993. From 1993 to 1995, when she was diagnosed with advanced cancer, she worked as production manager for Cell Renewal Systems of Ojai. Although her physical activities became increasingly limited in recent years, she continued cooking, gardening, crafts, writing, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Lanny Kaufer, of Ojai; son Denlow Enlow of Corte Madera; daughter Molli Loop of Ojai; stepson Aran Kaufer of Berkeley; stepdaughter Mara Kaufer of Santa Monica; father John E. Frey of Redding; sister Carol Evans of Carson City, Nev.; sister Kathryn Ramsey of Visalia; and grandsons Marlow Wink of Camarillo, and Nicholas Cunningham of Ojai.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cass, and her mother, Dorothy.
A memorial is being planned for March. Please contact the family for details.

Bernice Bruce

Bernice Bruce, 89, of Ojai, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, following a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 2, 1912, in Douglas, Wyo., and lived in Ojai for 50 years, coming from Long Beach, Calif.
Mrs. Bruce was a homemaker and a member of the Oak Tree House of Ojai.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Ernie Siedenkranz, of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Margaret Bruce of Ventura; son Silas Bruce of Oxnard; sister Shirley Damrow of Jay Em, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Bruce, in June 1957.
Graveside services will be held Monday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at Nordhoff Cemetery, with Pastor Don Moore officiating.
Memorials may be made to Help of Ojai.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.

 

Nora Mae Fain

Nora Mae Fain, 96, of Oak View, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002. She was born Oct. 21, 1905, in Thola, Ark., and had been a resident of Ventura County since 1943.
Mrs. Fain was a member of the Church of the Living Christ in Meiners Oaks.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Betty of Bakersfield, Douglas and Sharon of Port Hueneme, and James and Connie of Ventura; daughters and sons-in-law, Melba and Burley Watts of Texas, Jestine and Roland Conway of Lancaster, and Paul and Marcia Plaxton of Yucaipa; brother Clifton Passmore of Arkansas; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, two sons, Coy Elwood and Cecil William, and four grandchildren, Lynette, Cynthia and Mark Fain, and Jimmy Shoemaker.
Visitation was held Feb. 21 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
Services will be held today at 10 a.m., also at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lewis McClendon of Ventura Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura.

 

John Klenc

John Klenc, 94, of Ojai, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at his residence. He was born Feb. 11, 1908, in Dixon, Mo., and had lived in Ojai for 32 years, coming from Santa Monica, Calif.
Mr. Klenc worked as an aircraft field and service manager for McDonnell-Douglas and was a member of the Ojai Valley Community Church.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dorothy Klenc, of Ojai; daughter Janice Stewart of Downey, Calif.; brothers Frank Klenc of Santa Barbara, and Leo Klenc of Iron Mountain, Mich.; sisters Mary Gutenberg and Florence Cochran, both of Fayetteville, Ark.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call today from 2 to 6 p.m. at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. at Clausen Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Moore officiating. Interment will be at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
Memorial donations may be made to Ojai Valley Community Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home.
