Hawkins sets new NHS discus
record
by Misty Volaski
The Nordhoff High School Track and Field team, under the
leadership of new coach Danny Everett, ran to a second-place
finish in the Carpinteria-sponsored Rincon Races and Field meet
on Saturday, March 2nd.
Competing schools were Carpinteria, who had the highest point
totals for all four divisions, Nordhoff, Fillmore, Santa Ynez,
and Morro Bay.
Leading the charge and setting a new Nordhoff school record in
the discus was senior Jordan Hawkins, with a throw of 161 feet,
8 inches, beating Jeff Parish's 1988 record of 159 feet, 2 inches.
Hawkins' performance not only earned him top meet honors, but
a meet record as well.
Other outstanding varsity performances included freshman Ana
Levin's blaze to first places in both the girls' 100 and 200
meter dash and senior thrower Shannon Popp's double win of both
the shot put (34 feet, 8.75 inches) and discus (100 feet, 6
inches).
Nordhoff also racked up several varsity first-place titles. Sprinter
Das Baker in the boys 200 meter dash, Kenny Allen in the triple
jump, and the girls 4 by400 relay team of Sarah Nylander, Tayler
Johnson, Monica Kenton, and Lindsey Owen all earned first-place
awards.
Junior Varsity winners were Alexa Pulley in the 100 meter, Alyssa
Robinson in the 1200 meter, Sasha O'Brien in the discus, and
Alex Hernandez in the long jump.
