Channel Islands serves NHS
loss
by Misty Volaski
Nordhoff's boys' tennis team, coached by newcomer Ron Edwards,
lost its first match to Oak Park High School, 12-6.
NHS's top singles player, junior Andrew Nelson, won two of his
three sets, while freshmen Teddy Stern and Nathan Lurie, of J.V.
boys' soccer fame, each won one out of three matches.
Doubles Tyson Barker and Rhett Walker (pictured), won two of
their three sets, as well, winning 6-4 and 6-2, then losing 6-1.
Despite Barker's and Walker's domination of the court, Nordhoff
lost to Oak Park by six matches.
The Rangers' game against Channel Islands, however, was much
closer. The Rangers showed up in full force, ready to avenge
their season opener loss.
Nelson showed Channel Islands what he was made of, taking command
of his first two sets, 6-0 and 7-5.
The Rangers' No. 1 doubles team Barker and Walker continued
their strong early preformance, winning all three of their sets
to give Nordhoff what looked at the time to be the win.
Nordhoff's No. 2 doubles team Eric Lumiere and Meher Galler dominated
in a similar fashion to that of Barker and Walker, winning 6-1
and 6-4. Channel Islands narrowly defeated Galler and Lumiere,
6-7, in a close match.
Nordhoff fell to the Raiders, 8-10.
Of his 2002 team, Edwards said, "I've got a really good
group of kids this year."
Nordhoff plays away at Bishop Diego next Wednesday.
