Jenks, Jones lead VPS girls'
softball to win
by Misty Volaski
Villanova's girls' softball team started their season with
a victory on the road vs. Viewpoint High School in Calabasas,
9-6.
The Wildcats' offense was led by seniors Beth Schey, Elizabeth
Madlem, Katie Jones and Kristen Handley. Schey went three for
four in hitting with two doubles and three RBIs; Madlem also
was three for four and scored two runs. Jones was two for four
with a home run and 3 RBIs, while Handley nailed a double.
Freshman pitcher Connelly Jenks - sister of Nordhoff ace Whitney
Jenks - led the Wildcat defense. Jenks pitched five innings,
allowing only three hits and one earned run. Between Jones and
Jenks pitching, Viewpoint was only able to hit two balls out
of the infield.
At second base, Hadley repeatedly turned in key defensive plays.
Left-fielder Alyssa Strom made a diving catch to end a Viewpoint
rally late in the game. Villanova coach Bob Malkin praised the
team and called the win a real team victory.
Malkin said, "The Wildcats have a core group of seniors
leading the team offensively and defensively. We have a good
team with a lot of talent. I think we are going to surprise a
lot of people this year."
Villanova's next game is at 2 p.m., Saturday at home against
Laguna Blanca.
