Jessie May Potts Russell
Jessie May Potts Russell, 88, died Wednesday,
March 13, 2002, in Ojai. She was born Sept. 27, 1913, in Polk
County, Mo. 
In 1932, she married Everett Russell. In the fall of 1936, they
moved to California with their two children. In 1937, they moved
to Goleta with now three children. In 1941, they moved to the
Ojai Valley, where Mrs. Russell lived for 61 years.
She was a homemaker most of her life, and also assisted her husband
at Russell's ARCO gas station for many years. In the late '50s
and '60s she drove for the Ojai Taxi Company. Her hobbies included
sewing and making clothes for her children and their children.
Mrs. Russell attended the Ojai Valley Wesleyan Church for 50-plus
years and worked on many projects of the church. She also worked
in the tea tent at the Ojai Tennis Tournament from the early
1950s until the '90s when her health forced her to stop.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Peggy
Russell, of Santa Paula; daughter Donna Woolwine of Oak View;
daughter and son-in-law Charlotte and Reaford Wear of Santa Paula;
cousin Joe Potts of Ojai; sisters-in-law Eva Hancock, Fern Potts,
Betty Krzyminski, and brother-in-law Grover Spitz, all of Missouri;
sister-in-law Grace Russell of California; 11 grandchildren;
21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Everett
Russell, in 1999.
Friends may call at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai Friday, March
22, 2002, from noon to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the Ojai
Valley Wesleyan Church Saturday, March 23, at 1 p.m., with a
graveside service following at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park
in Camarillo. Pastor Lyn Thomas will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Ojai Valley Wesleyan Church.

Lon Stewart Locey
Lon Stewart Locey, 81, of Oak View,
died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, after enduring brain surgery to
remove a blood clot. He was born July 28, 1920, in Santa Maria,
Calif., and moved to Ventura with his family in 1928. He attended
Cabrillo Junior High, where he was elected student body president
in 1936, Ventura High School, where he was an all-leaague center,
and Ventura College, where he also played football.
Later, Mr. Locey served in the Army Air Corps in Alaska during
World War II, where he was a mess sergeant and was honorably
discharged in 1946. Upon returning to Ventura, he worked as a
bus driver, owned a Richfield service station on Thompson Boulevard
in Ventura, worked in the oil fields, and finally retired as
a teamster.
The Loceys moved to Oak View in 1968, where he and his wife became
horse trainers and accomplished riders. They were both elected
president of the Ventura County Saddle Club on several occasions.
Mr. Locey was also a fan of the Dodgers, Lakers and Bruins.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Locey; son Bill Locey
of Ventura; and sister Patricia Johnson of Las Vegas.

Arthur W. Gonzales
Arthur W. Gonzales, 76, of Atascadero,
Calif., died March 9, 2001, at the University of California at
San Diego Medical Center, due to a heart attack. He was born
Sept. 30, 1924, in Santa Barbara, Calif., and lived most of his
life in Ojai, graduating from Nordhoff High School in 1942. He
was active in football and track.
Mr. Gonzales spent four years in the Navy during World War II.
He married Martha Willbur on March 16, 1945, and they had two
sons. He and his family spent 15 years in missionary service
in Belize, Central America, before returning to the United States
due to health problems.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Gonzales, who
returned to Belize to continue her missionary service; sons Arthur
Jr. and Gary Gonzales; sisters Isabelle Kaye, Virginia Eastin,
Helen Fox and Evelyn Ingram; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gonzales was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Lawrence
Gonzales, and brother Larry Gonzales.
A memorial service was held March 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at Atascadero.
Salvatore Pietro
Salvatore Pietro, 89, of Ojai, died
Saturday, March 16, 2002, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 26, 1912, in New York, and was an Ojai resident
for 15 years, coming from Los Angeles.
A sculptor, Mr. Pietro was the son of a family of eminent Italian
sculptors and studied at Beaux Arts in New York City and at the
School of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy. He did commissions for private
collections in addition to establishing Pietro Studios in Van
Nuys and Los Angeles, where he produced interior and exterior
architectural designs.
He was a past president of the Santa Barbara Art Association.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Johnson Pietro, of Ojai;
stepson George Appel, of San Diego; sons Daniel Coverdale, of
Pasadena, and Brian Pietro, of Malibu; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home
in Ojai.
Velma Reynolds
Former Ojai resident Velma Reynolds,
84, died Friday, March 15, 2002. She was born
July 30, 1917, in Oklahoma, and lived in Ventura County for 70
years.
Mrs. Reynolds worked for the Ojai Valley Packing House and also
provided child care. For the past five years she lived in Fresno
with her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Andy Anderson. She
died at home with them.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Connie and Andy
Anderson of Fresno; daughters Eva Foss of Ventura, and Louise
Self of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Reynolds, grandson
Ronnie Anderson, son-in-law Ray Foss, and son-in-law Tom Self.

to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 21,
2002, at 2 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Ada L. May
Ada L. May, 101, of Ojai, died Saturday,
March 16, 2002, in Ojai after a lengthy illness.She was born
March 4, 1901, in Greenwich, England, and lived in Ojai for 45
years, coming from England.
Mrs. May was a nurse's aide. She served in the British Royal
Marines during World War II.
She is survived by daughters Vera Philps, of Hampshire, England,
and Rosemary James, of Ojai; son and daughter-in-law Monty and
Iris James, of Hampshire, England; sister-in-law Phyllis Marsh
and family, of Portland, Ore.; and many grandchildren and great-granchildren.
Private burial services will be held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park
in Ventura.

in Ojai.
Frances R. Rains
Our beloved mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother passed peacefully in her sleep at her home
in Ojai. Known to many in Ojai as the impeccably
dressed lady who had a big smile, kind word and a hug for anyone
she met on her daily walks around town.
Honored by the American Red Cross for over 25 years of service,
served as a Gray Lady volunteer at Acacias Care Center and St.
Joseph's Convalescence Hospital, and countless hours at Help
of Ojai delivering Meals on Wheels with her beloved husband,
Lynn Rains.
She is survived by her children, Pat Barker of Newport, Ore.,
Carol Roberts of Ojai, David Barker of Ojai, Hal Barker of Indian
Wells, Calif., and Alan Rains of Ojai; grandchildren Ashlee Barker,
Daniel Barker, Ryan Rios, Brandi Rios, Jeffrey Rains, Jami Rains,
Kristen Rains, Rod Alan Rains, and Rebecca Murry; and nine great-grandchildren.
All of us who knew and loved her will miss her forever.
Services will be held at Clausen Funeral Home, 316 E. Matilija
St., Ojai, Calif., on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at noon.

Janine Werner-Revoyr
Janine Werner-Revoyr, 61, died February
5, 2002, after a courageous, nearly seven-year battle with cancer.
She was a 40-year resident of Manhattan Beach and a part-time
resident of Oak View, where she was remodeling her house and
doing extensive landscaping of her garden for her hoped-for retirement.
She was a loving, compassionate and intelligent woman who never
missed "Final Jeopardy." An avid supporter of environmental
and animal causes, she enjoyed reading, gardening and traveling,
especially to Maui and Lanai.
Ms. Werner, born in Germany, was a graduate of Hollywood High
School, a 1964 graduate of UCLA, and continued her studies in
accountancy at USC. She managed her investment property.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Revoyr, daughter Amy (Melman)
Swindle and son-in-law Scott Swindle of San Diego, stepdaughter
Nina Revoyr of Los Angeles, mother Lore Barthelemy of Germany,
sister Beatrice Pace and nephew Robert Pace of Shaker Heights,
Ohio. She died eight days before the birth of her first grandchild,
Jasmine Janine. Also leaving behind her loving dogs, Jason and
Pepper, and her "guardian angel" cat, Alex, all rescued
animals.
A memorial service was held at Ms. Werner's home on Saturday,
February 9, 2002. Donations in her name may be made to the Humane
Society of Ventura County in Ojai.
