NHS tennis whacks Bishop Diego,
12-6
by Misty Volaski
In the past several years, Nordhoff has come to be known as
a nurturing place for budding tennis stars. Graduates such as
Tyson Swetek and Adam Avakian led their teams to the top of
the Fontier League year after year.
It seems this year's team isn't all that different - Tyson Barker,
Rhett Walker, Andrew Nelson, returning players on a relatively
young team, are the clear leaders of the 2002 squad.
Early season losses against Channel Islands and Oak Park haven't
stopped the Rangers, who keep improving as the season progresses,
said coach Ron Edwards.
Wednesday's game against Bishop Diego reiterated this, as the
Rangers took the Cardinals, 12-6.
Nelson had a solid victory, winning all three of his singles
sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.
Doubles Walker and Barker, and Evan Schick and J.J. Weber each
won two of their three sets in the doubles competition.
Up-and-coming players Meher Galler and Nathan Lurie also played
strong doubles matches, winning two of three sets. Freshmen Teddy
Stern and Sean Wells also contributed wins in singles play.
The Nordhoff boys' tennis team plays today, at Channel Islands
at 3 p.m.
