William H. Bowman
William H. Bowman, 85, of Ojai, died
Thursday, March 21, 2002, at his home. He was born May 21, 1916,
in Milwaukee, Wis., and lived in Ojai for nine years, coming
from Clearwater, Fla.
Mr. Bowman was an attorney. He served as a lieutenant in the
U.S. Navy, was a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association, and
a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Ojai.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Bowman, of Ojai; children
William Jr. of Boston, Mass., James of Chicago, Ill., Thomas
of Ojai, Susan of Clayton, Calif., John of Santa Monica, Calif.,
and Joe of Menlo Park, Calif.; and 22 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 26, at 9 a.m.
at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ojai, with Father Patrick
Kean, O.S.A., officiating. Interment was at Santa Clara Cemetery
in Oxnard following Mass. Visitation was held and rosary recited
Monday, March 25, at Clausen Funeral Home in Ojai.
Memorials may be made to Rosemore Foundation, 500 Kelton Ave.,
Los Angeles, CA 90024.

Bernice W. Atwell
Bernice W. Atwell, 85, of Ojai, died
Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital from
natural causes. She was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Nicehe, N.D.,
to Clifford and Carry Colison. She had been an Ojai resident
for 41 years, coming from Culver City, Calif.
Mrs. Atwell and her husband were business owners and spent time
traveling.
She is survived by her sons, Jack W. Atwell, of Palm Springs,
Calif., and Curtis M. Atwell, Jr., of Simi Valley, Calif.; sister
Adele McKnight of Sylmar, Calif.; five grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Curtis
M. Atwell, on Dec. 15, 1979.
No formal services were held.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home
in Ojai.
Mary M. Gholson
Mary M. Gholson, 89, of Ojai, died Friday,
March 22, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was born
May 16, 1912, in Benton County, Ark. She lived in Ojai for 68
years.
She and her husband, Joe Gholson, owned the Shell gas station
in Meiners Oaks, and she was a longtime member of the First Baptist
Church of Ojai. Her interests included traveling with her sister,
sports and watching the Lakers and Dodgers.
Mrs. Gholson is survived by her daughter, Louise Downard; son
and daughter-in-law Joseph Lynn and Shirley Gholson; eight grandchildren;
15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Tuesday, March 26, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Clausen
Funeral Home in Ojai. Graveside services will be held today at
11 a.m. at Santa Paula Cemetery, with Dr. Wilber Skeels of the
First Baptist Church of Ojai officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist
Church of Ojai.

Winona "Nona" Mackenzie
Winona "Nona" Mackenzie, 86,
of Ojai, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Royal Gardens following
a lengthy illness. She was born April 18, 1915, in Seattle, Wash.,
and lived in Ojai for 30 years, coming from the Los Angeles area.
Mrs. Mackenzie was a homemaker.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Timothy
Lucum, and nieces Melinda Lucum and Susan Taylor, all of Washington.
Private services will be held.
Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

Mary Nell Mortensen
Mary Nell Mortensen, 74, of Oak View,
died Monday, March 18, 2002, at her home following an accidental
fire. She was
born Dec. 19, 1927, in Clarkesville, Ark., and lived in Oak View
for 50 years, coming from Pima, Ariz.
Mrs. Mortensen had been a nurses's aide for Lomita Lodge and
prior to that owned and operated Mortensen's Rest Home in Oak
View.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Laura
Mortensen, and grandson Justin Mortensen, all of Ojai; brothers
Harold and Levi Pitts of Clarkesville, Ark.; sister Verna May
Dunagan of Duncan, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held.

Isabelle O'Brien
Isabelle O'Brien, 87, of Ojai, died
Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Ojai Valley Community Hospital
Skilled Nursing Unit. She was born Oct. 22, 1914, in Nova Scotia,
Canada, and lived in Ojai for 20 years. She was a 25-year Ventura
County resident.
Mrs. O'Brien had been a registered nurse.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Fred
Bell, of Chatsworth; a brother, Dr. John Feindel, of Canada;
five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter M. O'Brien,
and son Michael Patrick O'Brien.
Private family services have been held.

Velma Stroub
Velma Stroub, 98, of Ojai, died Wednesday,
March 20, 2002, at Ojai Valley Community Hospital. She was born
April 9, 1903, in Los Angeles, Calif., and lived in Ojai for
31 years.
Mrs. Stroub was a homemaker and also worked for the Los Angeles
Public Library. She was also a member of the Kenskill Trailer
Club.
She is survived by her son, Lawrence R. Stroub, of Duarte, Calif.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Ojai Villa
Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, with Pastor Jeff Holland officiating.
Private interment will be at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Daniel "Danny" Thomas Fraser
Daniel "Danny" Thomas Fraser,
43, of Oak View, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, following injuries
from an auto accident. He was born Feb. 13, 1959, in Ventura
to Ray and Frances Fraser. He was named for his grandfather,
Daniel Thomas Fraser, a pioneer of Ventura County.
He was employed for the past two years by McJunkin Corporation
as a warehouse supervisor. He was very active in the Ojai Men's
Softball, Ventura Recreation Softball, and the Oxnard Clean and
Sober Softball leagues. Throughout the years, he also coached
the Oak View Little League and the Ventura Babe Ruth teams, along
with the Packer Football League. Mr. Fraser was also active in
Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and would stop
whatever he was doing to listen and be of help.
He is survived by his mother, Frances Fraser, of Oak View; brother
Ray Fraser of Oak View; brother and sister-in-law Larry and Dana
Romero of Oak View; uncle Charles Lockett and wife Dorie of Modesto;
aunts Dorothy Olmsted and Roberta Buckler and husband Joe, all
of Everett, Wash., and Ruth Kirckof and husband Clarence of Brutton,
Minn., and Mary Jane Bibb and husband Jack of Newport Beach,
Calif.; best friend Cliff Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Fraser.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 29, from 2 to 8 p.m. at
the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
Chapel services will be held Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m., also
at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Wells officiating. Burial
will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to his mother,
Frances Fraser.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral
Home in Ventura.
