The Nordhoff High School track and field team was represented
by 34 Ranger athletes last Saturday at the 83rd Russell Cup Invitational
at Carpinteria High School.
This year, 40 schools from as far away as the San Francisco Bay
area competed in the meet. The top six performers in each event
win points for their team.
"Nordhoff's strong throwing team continued to shine,"
said assistant coach Scott Smith, "even under the competitive
pressure of a big, regional meet."
Leading the Nordhoff efforts was Shannon Popp, taking the first-place
gold medal in the discus with a throw of 116 feet. She also had
a second-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet,
10 inches.
Senior Justin Haney also brought home silver with his shot put
of 47 feet, 9 inches in the boys' varsity category.
The girl's varsity 4 x 400 relay team of Lindsy Klingberg, Lindsey
Owen, Taylor Johnson, and Ana Levin paced to a silver medal performance
with a time of 4:15.5.
Other varsity point winners for the Nordhoff team included Johnson,
fourth in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 29.4 seconds), to go with
her relay second place. Das Baker placed fifth in the 300 meter
hurdles, with a time of 42.6 seconds.
The standout for Nordhoff in the Freshman/Sophomore category
was up-and-coming hurdler, freshman Alexa Pulley, who brought
home second place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.1 seconds.
She also nabbed fifth place in the 300 hurdles (53.5 seconds).
Also finishing well was sophomore Josh Bonsworth, who placed
sixth in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 1.75 inches.
Nordhoff's next meet is a Frontier League tri-meet with Malibu
and Santa Clara, this Thursday at 3 p.m. at Malibu High School.
