Ranger batters cut through MHS Shark defense
by Misty Volaski

Though NHS's varsity softball team began the 2002 season rather dismally, the Lady Rangers rallied behind coach Tom Husted to once again become a force in the Frontier League, winning four of their last five games.
The Rangers left the Malibu field victorious again last Friday, hitting the Sharks with 10 runs off 10 hits.
Malibu was held to two runs, which came in the fourth and seventh innings off Ranger pitcher Diana Garvin, who relieved Tiffany Tolliver in the fourth inning. The two girls allowed only three Sharks' hits on the day.
Offensively, Christina Stoltz, "One of the county's best hitters," according to Husted, went two for four with a triple and two scored runs. Teammate Garvin also went two for four, and stole three bases.
The win ups the varsity Rangers to a 5-6 overall record.
Seizing another win for Nordhoff was the junior varsity squad, who bested the J.V. Sharks, 10-0.
On her first start of the year, pitcher Ashley Wolcott struck out seven and threw a no-hitter to hold the Sharks scoreless. Wolcott also batted 1000 with a single, while Courtney Kresge kept pace with a single of her own.
Shark pitcher Tracy Young and catcher Mel Kruger led their team from the mound and behind the plate, but could not stop the Ranger stampede.
In their second meeting, the J.V. Rangers traveled to Malibu with better results than their previous game, this time beating he Sharks 13-1.
Top batters for the Rangers included Taryn Odle, who homered into center field, doubled once and singled twice. She contributed three RBIs and also went four for five.
Pitcher Rachelle Madrid batted 1000 going three for three, with three singles and two runs scored. She brought out the heat to hold the Sharks to two hits and only one run.
Going two for four with a single and double to left field was Tianna Graham. Teammate Ali Weedon, sister of NHS'powerhouse catcher Trevor Weedon, crushed a home run to center field and crossed the plate three times, and added two RBIs.
The junior varsity Rangers are now 8-0 overall.
