NHS qualifies 21 at league finals
by Misty Volaski

Nordhoff's track team took on Frontier League opponents Malibu, Santa Clara, Calabasas and Santa Paula, along with host Oaks Christian, in the Frontier League championship meet. Last Friday's meet was the qualifier for the CIF preliminary meet, with the top two competitors in each varsity event advancing.
Senior Jordan Hawkins, who also excelled in football last fall, took first place in both the discus and the shot put. Senior co-captain Kenny Allen also had a busy day, winning the 200-meter dash and taking second place in both the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter. Teammate Das Baker bested Allen in the 400m, taking first in that event. The other gold medal performance was by Luis Robles, who placed first in the 800-meter.
Also joining these young men at CIF prelims will be Justin Haney (shot put), Chris Williams (discus) and David Smith (triple jump). All three boys placed second in their respective events.
Smith will also join his teammates Andy Bowman, Chad Butler and Keith Wu in CIF for the 4x100 meter relay team.
Lady Rangers also fared well at Oaks Christian, with Alyssa Robinson picking off the opposition in the final lap to win the 1600 meter. She earned the only individual gold, but two Lady Ranger relay teams also took top honors. Lindsy Klingberg, Monica Kenton, Tayler Johnson and Ana Levin dominated in the 4x100 meter, and Lindsey Owen later joined Johnson, Levin and Klingberg to win the 4x400.
Ana Levin also double-silvered individually in the 100-meter and 200 meter dashes. Klingberg and Owen also made the CIF team in the 400-meter, and Robinson and Johnson qualified for the 800-meter. Senior co-captain Shannon Popp advances with two solid performances in the shot put and discus, and will be joined by freshman Sasha O'Brien in the shot put. O'Brien will also be Nordhoff's first girls' pole vaulter to compete in CIF. Rounding out the team is senior co-captain and NHS valedictorian Erin Deneen in the triple jump.
The top nine finishers at CIF prelims, to be held at noon Saturday at Long Beach City College, will advance to CIF finals the following Saturday in Cerritos.
