Saints slam NHS varsity softball, 5-1
by Misty Volaski

Nordhoff's junior varsity softball team continues to amaze fans and rivals alike. With 10 wins and no losses in league, it seems as though Nordhoff will be guaranteed high-ranking Frontier League teams for the next several years.
Varsity, however, has been struggling during the 2002 season. Last year's graduation of team leaders like Lacey Albrent has left the squad fighting to maintain its reputation as a force in the Frontier League.
With their loss last Friday to Santa Clara, the varsity girls are currently 4-6 in league and 5-9 overall. Santa Clara "took it to the Lady Rangers," said coach Tom Husted.
The Saints scored three runs in the fifth inning, securing their four-run win over the Rangers. Nordhoff, which gained its sole run in the first inning, had five hits to the Saints' 10 and made three errors to eventually lose, 5-1.
The J.V. Rangers remain undefeated, despite an extremely close game against the Saints, 9-10 Nordhoff. Rangers Brigitte Wooten and Holly Meisch both homered in the first inning for four runs. Defensively, pitcher Becca Galiney took the mound and held the Saints to two runs in the first four innings of play. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Saints scored six runs to tie the game, 9-9. Relief pitcher Ashley Wolcott finished the sixth inning to stop the Saints' parade past home plate. In the bottom of the inning, Ranger Mallory Hinks scored Ali Weedon with a single to left field to take the lead. Closing pitcher Rachelle Madrid took over in the seventh, pitching two strikeouts for the eventual win.
The top batters for Nordhoff were Meisch with a home run and an RBI; Wooten, who went two for four with a home run, single and two RBIs; Weedon, who doubled and scored twice; Hinks, who singled twice with one RBI; Madrid, who had two singles and two runs; and Ashley Deslaurier who had a single and sacrifice bunt to go with her two RBIs.
The win over the Saints brings the Lady Rangers junior varsity squad to a perfect 10-0.
