Ojai P.O.N.Y. baseball closes
regular season with a bang
by Misty Volaski
The Mets won the Ojai P.O.N.Y. Pinto Division Championship
game. All 11 of the boys played great, said coach Mike Dawkins,
in a 16-3 win over the Giants. According to "Coach D"
(Dawkins) it was a "real team effort" and "they
are all stars in my eyes."
In the Mustang division championship, Nathan Wickstrum pitched
all six innings while gathering 14 strikeouts in a 17-6 Diamondback
win over the Angels.
The Diamondbacks were led by the strong hitting of Cody Burr
and Parker Colborn, with an amazing defensive double play by
center fielder Jonathan Woodcock. The Angels were led in hitting
by Alex Leckie.
In the consolation game, the regular season-winning Padres defeated
the Athletics in a 14-to-4 game. The fence shot of the game by
Tyler Wiggins provided the lift for the Padres. The A's brought
out all of their pitching in a great effort, but it wasn't enough
to topple the Padres.
The Bronco Division Championship was won by the Mets. Garrett
Graham provided four innings on the mound in the 14 to 4 win
over the Giants. The Twins put in a commanding effort to win
the consolation game over the Padres.
The division championship games were followed by awarding trophies
to each player, a seat in the dunk tank for coaches, a raffle
for prizes provided by Ojai Sports, and plenty of hot dogs and
hamburgers.
Thanks to all of the sponsors, volunteers, coaches, parents,
and players of Ojai P.O.N.Y. Baseball that have made this baseball
season one to remember.
The Pinto Allstars (ages 7 and 8) will have their annual game
at Sarzotti Park on Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
