by Misty Volaski
Surrounded by stars of stage and screen, the Michael Douglas
and Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament teed off Sunday in front
of hundreds of spectators at Ojai Valley Inn & Spa's golf
course.
Actors Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Samuel
L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, James Garner, Thomas Gibson, Alice Cooper,
Greg Kinnear, Kenny G, Martin Sheen, James Woods, Haley Joel
Osment and others were in attendance.
Last year, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Douglas and Kenny G won
the tournament. This year's winners will be announced July 21
when the tournament airs on ABC from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. following
the British Open.
The tournament was held in a three-player, nine-hole scramble.
Each of the three celebrity teams was guided by top golf instructors
Jim Flick, Butch Harmon, David Leadbetter, Jim McLean and Robert
Baker.
Proceeds of the event are donated to the Motion Picture and Television
Fund, which "enriches the lives of people in our Southern
California entertainment community by continuously evolving to
meet their health and human services needs." MPTF has set
up health and child care programs as well as the Motion Picture
and Television Hospital and a retirement community in Woodland
Hills.
Last year, the event, which was held in Palos Verdes, raised
more than $500,000 for the fund, and has raised over $1.5 million
for MPTF.
MPTF CEO Ken Scherer said, "We are extremely greatful to
Michael Douglas and our sponsors. Their participation allows
us to continue our 80-year tradition of caring for those in the
entertainment family."
The tournament will be held at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa
for the next three years.
