Race on for council seats
by Chris Wilson
As of Monday the race is on to fill three open seats on the
Ojai City Council.
Mayor Pro Tem incumbent Joe DeVito and Charles Stringer picked
up candidate nomination packets at City Hall said City Clerk
Carlon Strobel.
Councilmen whose seats are up for grabs include David Bury, Mayor
Steve Olsen and DeVito. The election will be held Nov. 5, 2002.
Strobel said the filing deadline is Aug. 9, but will be extended
to Aug. 14 if any of the incumbents chooses not to file for candidacy.
DeVito completed his paperwork Tuesday and filed it with Strobel.
This will be his fifth race for a council seat. Only Mayor Steve
Olsen has served longer - about six months longer, DeVito said.
"Hey, whatever happens, happens," DeVito said Tuesday.
The nomination paperwork asks potential candidates and incumbents
for a candidate's statement, an economic interest statement,
and pre-campaign intention requirements. It also provides information
on qualifications for holding public office, a calendar of events
and general filing information.
A City Council seat is a four-year term. Councilwomen Rae Hanstad's
and Sue Horgan's seats will be up for grabs in 2004.
