OVAC kids swim for two wins
by Misty Volaski
The Ojai Valley Aquatic Club Kids' Water Polo teams grabbed
two wins in the Gold Coast Water Polo League's week number four
Friday night at Newbury Park High's pool. The B League win was
a squeaker against South Coast Red, with Ojai outlasting South
Coast 7- 6. South Coast's scoring came from Martin Brando (four
goals) and Nick Jackson (three goals).
Ojai was generous with its chances with nearly every Ojai player
getting a shot at the goal. Elise Santangelo had three shots
on goal and two steals and an assist, while Eric Glass had a
shot on goal and a steal. Allyson De Ballets had another shot
on goal and three steals; Ernie Smith played a near-identical
game, with a shot on goal, but only a pair of steals. Scottie
Roberts added a shot and two steals and an assist.
Converting shots for Ojai were Seth Scarminach (two for three),
Ben Foley (one for one), Molly Katz (one for one) and Danielle
Junod (three for four). Garrison Harward had six stopped shots
and a pair of steals. Caitlyn Mahon led Ojai's defense with six
steals and an assist.
The A League game had the Santangelo sisters switching the family
suit to face Gold Coast. Big sister Anna shot two for three with
a defensive stop and an assist. Harward again owned the goal
and had seven blocked shots and four steals with outlet passes
feeding the transition all evening.
Smith was at both ends of the pool with four key defensive stops
and a goal on his only shot. Mahon kept the defensive motor running
with four steals, two defensive stops and an assist. Molly Katz
was two for three shooting and had a pair of steals.
With three steals, a defensive stuff at the two-meter and an
assist was DeBallets; teammate Danielle Junod rounded out the
defense, stealing the ball four times and making two defensive
stops. She also had an assist and went three for five in shooting.
Ojai's Ben Foley had quite a night winning all four sprints shooting
two for three and dishing three assists. Scoring for Gold Coast
were Alana Altmann for with an ace and Corey Bowdach with two.
Ojai prevailed 10-4.
