OVMSA Chiliheads lose steam
after Friday win
by Misty Volaski
Ojai Optical showed what it was made of Sunday after the Division
One squad drove the Chiliheads into the ground, 17-6.
What made the win even sweeter was the fact that it came just
two days after the Chiliheads handed Ojai Optical a 18-10 loss,
dropping them to a 8-9 record.
Though historically the Chiliheads have held up as a strong team
with several league championships in the past, Sunday's two losses
hurt the team's record considerably.
In Friday's game, the Chiliheads were scrambling to catch up
to Ojai Optical in the earlier innings. Finally, in the fourth
inning, both teams were tied, 6-6. Were it not for Mike Quinn's
two RBIs and Ralph Campitelli's four singles, Ojai Optical could
have easily taken the game.
Come Sunday, however, it seemed that Ojai Optical and OST/Chemolene
found every weak spot the squad had. Despite Chilihead Dave Barger's
three RBIs and Eric Smentek's four-for-five hitting, both opponents
triumphed over the Chiliheads by at least six runs.
OST/Chemolene began the slaughtering by pounding out nine runs
in the first inning alone, and eventually going on for the 16-10
win.
Ojai Optical took over from there, inflicting a huge 17-6 loss
on the Chiliheads. Ojai Optical drove in 10 runs in the first
inning, and making the Chiliheads fight for their six runs.
Wednesday's games were the last of the regular OVMSA season.
