#$?*!@$% wins Callender Cup
by Lenny Roberts
The 2002 Sundowners Golf League season ended last week with
the Callender Cup playoff, which was won by #$?*!@$%.
Despite having only three of its five members present for the
18-hole round played Saturday morning, #$?*!@$%, a first-time
winner in the 12-year-old Tuesday afternoon league, still managed
to post a combined 107 points for the round, bringing their season
total to 1,033, six better than Parker's Putters, which three-peated
in the late 1990s.
With 115 points Saturday, Chief's "i.e." won the playoff
round, but when combined with their 910 points for the regular
season, fell eight points back for a third-place overall finish.
The Sambaggers, Above Par, Heater's Ropers, the Scramblers and
Good, Pick It Up rounded out the eight playoff teams.
Doug Ragan, of the Sambaggers, shot the low playoff round with
a 2-under-par 70. Others of note were Sam Williamson and Terry
Gustafson, who each posted rounds of 73, and newcomer Barkley
Martin, who finished with a 75. Ragan, Williamson, Gustafson
and Martin all play for the Sambaggers.
On the strength of a playoff-round high 43 points from Ray Lara
Good, Pick It Up, which finished in a first-place tie with Above
Par at the end of eight weeks of play, had a miserable second
half, but finished strong in the playoff round with 114 points,
just one behind Chiefs "i.e."
League records either tied or set during the 2002 season are
as follows:
#$?*!@$% - 473 points for the second half and 926 total season
points; Steve Streich - 27 single-night points; Sam Williamson
- nine-hole round of 30 strokes; Jacob Lusk - individual 309
season points, 34.50 average round strokes, and 19.31 average
round points.
The 2002 season concludes Sunday morning at Soule Park with an
18-hole, 16-team Scramble.
