coming to Surfer's Point
by Misty Volaski
The California Street Ventura Longboard Championships, to
be held at Surfer's Point Park in Ventura, is coming up Sept.
14 and 15, from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day.
Though the deadline for entries has passed, championship coordinators
say it is definitely a "spectator event."
Age divisions include:
· Junior men 19 and under
· Men 20 to 29 years
· Men 30 to 39 years
· Men 40 to 49 years
· Men 50 to 59 years
· Senior men 60 and over
· Women's Open Division
· Old Log competition
The Old Log Division is a "crowd teaser," event in
which surfers with use boards at least 30 years of age and will
be held on Sept. 15. No leashes or wet suits are allowed in this
event.
Also on Sunday will be the "legendary exhibition heats,
where '50s and '60s surfing greats will participate in an "expression
session." Surfers expected to attend include Tom Morey,
John Peck, Paul Strauch, Mickey Munoz, L.J. Richards, Bob "The
Greek" Bolen, Henry Ford, Kemp and Denny Aabergm, Jock Sutherland,
and the 81-year-old legend, Rabbit Kekai.
In addition, the real "Gidget," Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman,
will be at the championships signing her re-released book at
11 a.m. Sunday.
"Gidget" is the same book that became the movie that
put surfing on America's cultural map.
The championship is a benefit for the Stanley's Reef Foundation,
a non-profit organization (www.stanleysreef.org).
