Thacher bests NHS, 14-4, in
Toad tennis season opener
by Misty Volaski
It was junior Virginia Dawson all the way in Tuesday's match
againt Nordhoff.
Dawson, originally of Rye, N.Y., is boarding at The Thacher School
where she is the No. 1 singles player for the tennis team. She
proved her status in the team's first match of the season, winning
all three of her sets, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3.
Nordhoff's No. 1 player, Emily Johnston, wasn't far behind, taking
two of her three matches. She lost only to Dawson, barely missing
the win, 6-4.
Johnston beat Toad Arielle Flam, 6-1 and then Ellen Adams, 6-2.
Nordhoff coach Rose Boggs said, "Emily was outstanding,
winning two sets. The doubles players (also) had some close matches.
We'll be working on doubles strategies this week."
Despite giving it their all, Nordhoff's doubles teams couldn't
shake No. 1 Toad doubles players Sarak Shaikh and Jackie Au,
who won all three sets, 6-1, 6-1, 7-5.
Boggs said that she thought this year's team would be a "strong"
one. "There are many returning
players this year. We've got a strong team, and the girls have
a lot of spirit. They're working very hard on their skills,"
she said.
