by Misty Volaski
The Senior Eagles Team scored a big win over the Fillmore
Raiders, 24-0. The shutout came after two disappointing losses.
The Eagles dominated the entire game, with Eric Luna scoring
two touchdowns, Moises Gonzalez had three quarterback sacks,
and a tremendous ball carrier sack by Jordan Fries-Hostka which
created a fumble that was scooped up by A.J. White and run back
to the end zone for the third touchdown, which upped the score
to 24-0. White also blocked a Raider punt. Richard Loughman
intercepted a Raider pass with only 20 seconds left in the
game; as he was tackled he pitched the ball to Eric Luna, who
tried unsuccessfully to carry in another touchdown before time
ran out.
The Bantam team lost its first game of the year to the Rhinos
of Port Hueneme, 30-6. John Woodcock scored the only touchdown
for the Eagles on a 35-yard run. Their record is now 2-1.
The J1-Blue team is blue in the face, the Eagles started off
with an air attack against the Steelers of Newberry Park. Drew
Rodriquez hooked up with wide receiver Gabe Beedy and tight end
Tyler Cowles for a 65-yard drive in the first quarter that was
stopped on the five-yard line by an interception. Rodriquez threw
for a total of 120 yards, capping the day with a touchdown pass
to Joseph Brazier in the fourth quarter.
The defense, led by Gabe Beedy, Tyler Wadsworth, Tyler Wiggins,
Trevor Leal and Tyler Cowles held the Steelers to one offensive
touchdown, the other touchdown came on a punt return in the second
quarter, as the Steelers pulled out the win, 14-6.
When the head coach Ed Valencia was asked how his team will rebound,
he responded, "Our team has a lot of heart; we play hard
for four quarters. When we get the break we need, we will capitalize.
This team is ready for a win next week and I think we'll get
it."
The loss put the Eagles back with a 0-3 record. They will be
playing at 5 p.m. tomorrow against the Raiders of Fillmore.
The J1-Gold team improved their record, 3-0, with a win over
Santa Paula by a score of 28-0.
The Eagles controlled both sides of the ball in this contest.
On defense, the Eagles front eight - Taylor Kelly, Cody Burr,
Evan Magill, Parker Johnsen, Shane Wolcott, Chad Gibson, Chris
Gibson and Daniel Vigil - harassed the Cardinals strong-armed
quarterback all day long.
Chris Gibson topped the defense with three tackles and two fumble
recoveries.
Special teams were once again a bright spot. Tanner Cobb did
his job with consistent kicking. The Eagles recovered two on-sides
kicks. On offense center Phil Long led the siege with outstanding
blocking. Chad Gibson had a 27 yard touchdown where he was touched
by nine defenders and broke six tackles. Dougie Davidson contributed
with a pass reception.
Jimmie Johnson was the key in the team's running game (86 yards
on seven carries). Daniel Vigil (87 yards on nine carries) lead
the offense to 229 yards on the ground.
The Gold team will travel to Camarillo to play the Silver team
at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
