VPS racket girls falter in
CIF playoffs
by Misty Volaski
Villanova's Lady Wildcat tennis squad sent two players, Fernanda
Zapata and Lauren SIms, to the CIF Individual Playoffs at Agoura
High School last weekend.
Though both lost in the playoffs - Sims to Sunday Tsai of Oaks
Christian, 2-6, 0-6 and Zapata to Melanie Brown of St. Mary's
Academy, 1-6, 0-6 - both dominated the Condor League throughout
the year.
During the regular season league play, Zapata shut out seven
players, 6-0, including one of Thacher's best players, Virginia
Dawson. Her overall record was 15 wins and three losses.
Sims also had a good year, with only two losses and one tie due
to a rainout, for a total for 15 wins and two losses.
Because of their combined 30-5 league singles record, the two
girls were the only two Condor League representatives to go to
CIF. The only other school in the Tri-Counties area to send two
players to CIF was Oxnard.
Sims, a sophomore, resides in Ojai. She has also participated
in the Ojai Tennis Tournament.
Zapata, a native of Mexico, is a junior dorm student who also
plays basketball.
Coach Brian Grisin said, "I am extremely proud of the effort,
dedication and leadership of Lauren and Fernanda this season.
We look forward to next year."
