Regents abuse Villanova 'Cats
By Jesse Phelps

The Villanova varsity girls' and boys' basketball teams had a rough week. The girls lost to the Regents from La Reina, 64-35.
Playing without some key weapons, Villanova was overmatched from the get-go, but behind the rebounding of Alyssa Strom and Elizabeth Clifton, kept the margin about the same in the fourth quarter.
The team committed an amazing 33 turnovers in only 32 minutes of play, but shot well once they got near the hoop. Stephanie De Santis scored 11 points to lead the lady Wildcats and Brittany Smallwood added seven. Clifton added three points and seven boards.
The girls made up for it in a nonleague game at Malibu Monday night. Katie Parziale returned to action in style, blocking four shots and taking 11 rebounds. Caitlin Kirby led the 'Cats with 10 points including a the dramatic game winner in overtime. She made two threes in helping Villanova even its season record at 3-3.
De Santis and Lauren Van Keulen added eight points apiece in the win.
Leading scorer and rebounding machine Djadji Daffe was on the bench for the beginning of the boys' varsity game with Bishop Diego on Saturday night but came in to contribute 12 points and seven boards in a heartbreaking two-point defeat.
The Wildcats missed several chances to put the game away down the stretch and the Cardinals came back to defeat Villanova on its home floor 45-43. It was an exciting battle and Villanova got a strong performance out of forward Nate Langelier, who consistently came up with huge plays defensively.
Langelier blocked five shots but it wasn't enough. "We just go back to the drawing board on Monday and try to get things fixed up. We executed a lot, we did a lot of things the coach told us to, we just didn't finish the game," he said.
