Lady Rangers sink Vikings' ship, 68-30
By Ted Cotti
Thursday, Nordhoff's girls' varsity basketball
squad bested cross-town rival Thacher, 62-49. The Toads (8-3)
played with both a strong defense and offense, out-rebounding
the Rangers, 50-33. However, it was Nordhoff's five three-pointers,
two coming from Sarah Nylander in the second half, and 14-point
performances from Johanna Rothermel and Alison Bennett that kept
Nordhoff on top.
The Lady Rangers led 35-20 at the half and opened a 26-point
lead at one point, but the Toads (who beat Bishop Diego Friday)
"never gave up," said NHS head coach Ted Cotti.
Friday Nordhoff went on to crush Hueneme (7-12), 68-30 - the
Lady Rangers' second biggest win margin this year.
Cotti called it "our best defensive effort thus far."
Against the Vikings, Nordhoff unveiled its new press, making
23 steals (four from Tahnie Benitez and three each from Nylander
and Rothermel). Nylander (who had eight points) held Hueneme's
star, Jeanie Roberson, to 12 on five of 16 shooting. Benitez
added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Bennett netted 11 points
and 13 rebounds.
Becky Kennedy and Alexis Kenyon earned eight points apiece. Kenyon
"played her best game of the year," said Cotti, directing
Nordhoff's offense as point guard.
Nordhoff played their league-opener against Santa Paula last
night. Results of that game were unavailable as of press time.
