Lady Ranger cagers stymie S.C. Saints
By Jesse Phelps
Nordhoff's girls' varsity basketball team
faced a big league challenge against long-time rival Santa Clara
Tuesday night - and they made it look easy. When all was said
and done, Nordhoff claimed a dominant, 72-48 win over the Saints
and Nordhoff completely dominated throughout the game.
Santa Clara's Ashley Morton hit a pair of three-pointers down
the stretch and consistently drove through a porous fourth-quarter
defense made up mostly of Ranger reserves to narrow a gap that
stood at more than 30 points much of the second half.
Sarah Nylander was the offensive star for Nordhoff. Normally
a starter, Nylander came off the bench in this one for what coach
Ted Cotti called "disciplinary reasons" but that never
affected her play.
"She's very mature," said Cotti of his star forward.
By night's end, Nylander's line was 18 points, five rebounds
and four steals. With Alison Bennett struggling uncharicteristically
from the field, Nordhoff relied more on its perimiter game and
on transition opportunities created by its full-court trap.
With the win, Nordhoff moved to 12-10 overall and 2-1 in league
play.
