Storm, winds batter Ojai
By Lenny Roberts
It may have spoiled a planned
round of golf, but rocks in the roadway and flooded intersections
were welcomed signs Saturday as the Ojai Valley received nearly
4 inches of late-season rain, bringing us out of a second straight
winter season of less-than-normal totals.
The season got off to a good start as November and December rain
exceeded the normal, and forecasters hoped that a mild El Niño
year might make up for last year's severe lack of rain. But a
warm and dry January and February, and previous measurable rain
this month only recorded on March 4, took care of that until
Saturday.
In the aftermath of the storm, high winds buffeted Ojai on Monday,
briefly knocking out power and felling at least four oak trees
- three in the Arbolada and one at the Ojai Police Station -
whose root systems were weakened by the saturated ground. One
tree at the corner of El Toro and Del Norte roads, fell into
a power line, setting in on fire.

| Four
inches of rain Saturday were more than enough to flood local
streams and rivers. Above: this dog found itself swept away by
the raging San Antonio Creek. Residents discovered the dog trapped
in brush and quickly called 911. The Ventura County Swiftwater
Rescue team was close at hand and able to come to the aid of
the unfortunate canine. |
