VPS conquers Saints, 6-2
By Misty Volaski
The Wildcat softball team traveled
to Oxnard, Tuesday to play the Santa Clara Saints and Villanova
came away with a 6-2 victory.
The Wildcats were led by pitcher Whitney Jenks, who struck out
eight batters and held the Saints to five hits. Jenks also went
two for three and had an RBI at the plate.
"Whitney just played an incredible all-around game,"
said coach Bob Malkin.
First baseman Tiffany Adams also went two for three and drove
in a run. Of Adams, Malkin said, "It's great to have someone
with Tiffany's abilities and knowledge of the game at such a
crucial position."
The Wildcats are playing the toughest schedule in the school's
history, taking on much larger schools with established programs.
Malkin's daughter Sydney is the Wildcat's starting catcher. Together,
the two could be a deadly pair for opposing teams.
While Coach Malkin was reluctant to extol his daughter's abilities
behind the plate, coach John Jenks was not, saying, "Sydney
is a very smart catcher. Some of Whitney's pitches can be really
hard to catch because of the movement on the ball. Sydney and
Whitney are both smart players who love the game. They are really
fun to watch."
The Wildcats travel to Burbank Friday to take on Providence High
School, which is ranked No. 1 in Southern Section CIF small schools.
They play again Saturday, traveling to Camarillo to take on Cornerstone
Christian in a Condor League game.
