NHS Ranger boys' tennis creams opposition
By Misty Volaski
The boys' varsity tennis team
seems ready to rumble with the best of them this year.
With seasoned returners such as Andrew Nelson, Maher Galler and
Teddy Stern, Nordhoff's chances for placing well in the Frontier
League look to be good.
Against the 0-3 Channel Islands Raiders, Nordhoff pounded them
with a 15-3 win.
Each of Nordhoff's top three singles started off slow, with three
losses in singles, but came back to win two points each out of
three for the Rangers. Both Nathan Lurie and Galler provided
a 6-0 shutout and a 6-2 win each, while No. 3 singles player
Tim Coburn had two close wins (7-5, 6-4).
No. 1 Ranger doubles team Nelson and Andrew Hartman were a force
on the court, with two shutouts and a 6-2 win. No. 2 doubles
duo James Dennis and Mike Matzke matched them, also with two
shutouts and a 6-2 win.
Rangers Eric Johnson and Matt Wolfe brought up the rear, with
two 6-1 wins and a close 7-6 win.
Nordhoff went on to play Bishop Diego, and handed them a similar
loss of 16-2. Nelson stepped up to play as the No. 1 singles
player this time, and won all three matches, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. Stern
also netted three points for Nordhoff (6-1, 6-1, 6-2), while
Hartman added two ( 5-7, 6-4, 6-1).
Ranger No. 1 doubles John Anderson and Coburn skimmed by with
a 6-4 win over Bishop Diego, then flew past their No. 2 and No.
3 doubles players with two wins of 6-1 and 6-2.
Nordhoff's No. 2 doubles players Matzke and Dennis also nabbed
three match wins (6-3, 6-3, 6-0). Johnson and Wolfe improved
after their first match loss of 6-7 to win the next two matches,
6-1 and 6-0.
Nordhoff will play at Buena Tuesday at 3 p.m.
