Cardinals trip up NHS lady softballers, 11-5
By Misty Volaski
The Nordhoff girls' varsity softball squad
played Santa Paula last week at Santa Paula.
Despite a valiant effort by Rangers Carly Witt and Candice Schmidt,
Nordhoff's ladies fell to the Cardinals, 11-5. Though the rivalry
has gone back and forth through the years, it was the Cardinal
squad who came out on top in the early-season game.
Though the Rangers started out with a huge five runs in the second
inning, they failed to score any more runs the rest of the game.
Those five runs tied them with the Cardinals in the second, but
Santa Paula quickly pulled ahead in the third, sliding in five
more runs in that inning, and one more in the fifth before winning,
11-5.
The Rangers' starting pitcher, Rachelle Madrid allowed 10 runs
scored, eight of which were earned runs. She also threw one strikeout
before being replaced by Brenna Lowry, who finished up, allowing
one earned run and with one strikeout. Both girls were supported
by catcher Sarah Stoltz.
For the Lady Rangers, second baseman Carly Witt batted two for
three with two singles and one scored run.
Teammate Candace Schmidt hit two for four,
batting for two singles to left field to go with her one run.
Santa Paula's second baseman Sarah Ruiz proved deadly to the
Rangers, pounding three singles, one triple and four RBIs. Cardinal
Andrea Prado followed suit, similarly diving in four more teammates.
Nordhoff's league record is currently 1-2.

and Santa Paula statistics to this article.
