Sundowners open
13th golf season
By Lenny Roberts

The Sundowners Golf League finished its 13th season opener Tuesday afternoon at Soule Park with the Village Idiots perched atop the standings.
With 57 points, Capt. Mike Willet's team took a two-point lead over second place Leftovers, four ahead of Above Par and Chiefs I.e.
In the 16-week league where points, not scores determine each individual player's performance, Jay Ackerman earned 21 points for his nine-hole round of 39. Other point leaders were Scott Davis, Jay Jamison, Mike Urbanek, Jim Corral, Scott Chasse and Brian Ramsey, each of whom posted 20 points.
Low-gross rounds for the day were posted by Davis, 35, Corral and Jacob Lusk, 36, and Stan Coburn, Jamison and Terry Gustafson, with one-over-par 37s.
All but seven of the league's 80 players showed up to play on a chilly, overcast afternoon. Play resumes Tuesday, and will continue through August, when the top teams from each half compete in a playoff and the Callender Cup, named after Ed Callender, the league's 96-year-old honorary commissioner.
Last year's champions, #$?!@$%, returned to defend the title, as did 14 other teams. Jamison, who along with Rob Graham played many years with Sam Williamson's Sambaggers, are the nucleus of Dr. Jay's FPs, the leagues only new team. After 12 seasons, the charter Sambaggers are now known as Meiners Oaks Sash and Door.
