The 103rd Ojai
Tennis Tournament
By Misty Volaski
The stands were full Sunday morning
as some of the finest names in amateur tennis took to the courts
at Libbey Park for the final rounds of play in the Ojai Tennis
Tournament.
The heat was on in the Pac-10 Women's Singles match, where the
University of Oregon's Daria Panova and California Lutheran's
Raquel Kops-Jones faced off in an incredibly close match. All
eyes were on them as Panova made the final point for the win,
7-6 (6), 6-2.
"She played really well," said Panvoa of Kops-Jones.
"(It helps) me when a lot of people are around." Panova
also won the PAC-10 Women's Singles indoors championship, which
she said was her goal.
Later that day, Kops-Jones paired up with Christina Fusano to
beat Maia Mlakar and Emilie Scribot of the University of Arizona
for the PAC-10 Women's Doubles championship.
Last year's Pac-10 Men's Singles runner-up, the University of
Washington's Alex Vlaski, faced off against Marcin Matkowski
of UCLA. Though the first match was close, Matkowski began the
second match with a definite mental advantage, which seemed to
be the downfall of Vlaski. Again, Vlaski found himself with the
second-place medal, even though the day before he'd beaten Rodrigo
Grilli, last year's Pac-10 Men's Singles champion.
