Above Par takes
Sundowners lead
By Lenny Roberts

Blamed on the wind and unusual cold in the opening round of the 13th Sundowners Golf League season a week ago, the worst overall scores in recent memory were posted.
Despite much better weather Tuesday afternoon at Soule Park, the trend continued in week No. 2 when scores included nine nine-hole rounds of between 47 and 49, and five rounds of more than 50. And some of those high scores were posted by some of the league's better player.

With 23 points from Brian Ramsey, 21 from newcomer Jerod Wallace, and 20 from team captain Dave Cornell, Above Par jumped on top of the pack with 64 points, taking an early nine-point advantage over the Village Idiots, last week's leaders, and 10 over 2002 Callender Cup winners, #&?*!@$%. Two-time champs, Bopper's Thumpers, follow with 107 total team points.

The Thumpers totaled 55 points - 20 from Jim Coultas, 18 from Jacob Lusk, who played even par for the second straight week, and 17 from the always-reliable Jim Doyle.
By shooting three under par, Wallace posted the 16-team league's best round, followed by Doug Ragan's 34. Lusk and one-time Ojai city champion Sam Williamson shot even-par, and Mark Ackerman, Mike Urbanek and Scotty Davis each came in at one over par.

Ramsey's 23 were the most points by any of the 73 players who showed up. Ackerman and Bill Hatch scored 22 points each, and Wallace, and Mark Bartholemew, Ragan, Urbanek, Marshall Lopez and George Ortiz each tallied 21.
Play in the 16-week season resumes Tuesday.
