Gold Coast tourney takes toll on OVAC
It began as a weekend of
lumps for the Ojai Valley Aquatic Club with a drubbing from
Santa Barbara Blaze to begin the end-of-league tournament. Santa
Barbara handed Ojai their head: 14-0. High spots for Ojai were
Adam Ogg and Caleb Somers combining for 12 saves in goal and
Seth Scarminach and Danielle Junod combining for a couple of
defensive stuffs.
Later, Ojai dropped a tough 5-4 battle with Malibu with Adam
Ogg starring in goal with eight saves and two steals. J.J. La
Salle had a pair of steals and defensive stuffs. Dustin Castro
and Taylor Wolfe had a steal each. Tyler Brown had two defensive
stuffs as did Caitlyn Mahan to go with two steals. Ernie Smith
had a steal and shot one for two. Smith's goal fired in from
seven meters and brought Ojai to within one.
Molly Katz battled in 2-meter water all afternoon and shot one
for one. Joe Dutter nabbed three steals, dealt an assist and
had two shots on goal. Reed Gordon won a sprint, grabbed two
steals, shot twice and dealt two assists. Danielle Junod was
all over the tank making five steals, had two defensive stuffs
and shot one for three.
By far, the most exciting game of the tournament was Ojai's battle
against Newbury Park's Golden Bay. Adam Ogg had another outstanding
game in the cage with six stops in the cage, three steals and
a long-range assist the length of the pool. Caleb Sommer won
three sprints for Ojai dealt two assists, made a defensive stuff
and shot one for three. Seth Scarminach made a defensive stuff,
two steals and had four shots on goal. Smith had a stuff and
two shots on goal. Tyler Brown had a pair of steals and a shot
on goal as did Joe Dutter. Reed Gordon made a pair of steals
and shot twice.
Katz shot one for two and nabbed two steals and Danielle Junod
was all over, dealing an assist, grabbing two steals and shooting
three for four.
Tied 6-6 at the end of regulation, it was Golden Bay's Owen Lloyd
and Landen Cooley making the difference in the end. Though Ojai's
Caleb Sommer won the sudden-death sprint and Reed Gordon had
a valiant attempt on goal, Golden Bay's Greg Lutler made one
of his 10 saves in the cage and set up Owen Lloyd for the game
winner. The final score was Golden Bay 7, Ojai 6.
Gold Coast League will pick back up for the summer months in
mid-June. OVAC meets every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 4
p.m. at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.
