Wildcat golfers take league for fourth time
By Misty Volaski
The Villanova boys' golf team
wrapped up its fourth straight Condor League title and went undefeated
in Condor League play this season with a 5-0 league record.
They finished the season with a 12-3-1 overall record with victories
over Bishop Diego, St. Bonaventure (twice), Oak Park, Malibu
(twice), and Viewpoint.
In the playoffs, however, VPS didn't fare as well as in league,
placing 15th out of 20 teams in the Central Coast Section of
the CIF team playoffs on May 12. The Wildcats shot a 413 as a
team at Village Country Club in Lompoc. San Marcos won the tournament
with a 372.
Villanova's individual scores:
· Kyle Marme, 76
· Mero Marme, 80
· Clark Tevis, 82
· Ryan Kirby, 85
· Aaron Harter, 90
Kirby, a senior and four year captain of the golf team (also
MVP of the team), will be attending the University of Hawaii,
where he will continue to play golf. He will also be participating
in the Ventura City Championships in early June.
"Ryan was certainly our MVP and the most consistent golfer
on the team," noted VPS coach Brian Grisin. "We are
going to miss his valuable leadership and competitiveness."
At the CIF Individual Playoffs at Sterling Hills last Tuesday,
all three Condor League representatives were from Villanova.
Kyle Marme finished with an 83 and Mero Marme posted an 88. Aaron
Harter withdrew while on the 14th hole. The cut was at 75.
Grisin was dissappointed with the way the year ended after such
successful regular season play, "But overall we are proud
of our accomplishments this year. We set school records for best
nine- and 18-hole rounds (183, 384 respectively) and earned our
fourth straight league championship. "
