Above Par staves off Bopper's Thumpers
By Lenny Roberts

Drizzle, plugged fairways and sanded greens didn't stop the Sundowners Golf League's best player from shooting a 4-under-par 32 Wednesday afternoon.

His team, Above Par, needed his sterling performance to finish the first half of the 16-week season one point ahead of surging Bopper's Thumpers, which rallied with week-high 63 team points to qualify for the August playoff. Also qualifying was the vastly improved Rhino's FFFF, which took third place, four points ahead of the Scramblers.
Wallace, who is averaging less that 35 strokes for the nine-hole rounds, birdied holes 1, 2, 5 and 7 for 22 points, one less than Jim Coultas, who led the Thumpers with an even-par 36.

Also contributing to the Thumper's attack were Jacob Lusk and Dwayne Hall, who posted scores of 33 and 42, good for 21 and 19 points, respectively, as the twice-defending champs snuck into the playoff picture, jumping into second place after entering the week tied for fifth place with That's Good, Pick It Up, which totaled just 53 points for the week.

Last year's champs. #&?!@$%, were also a surprise, falling from playoff contention in third place last week to seventh with a disappointing 48 points.

Behind Wallace's 32 and tied with Lusk at 33 for the best scratch rounds of the week was Scotty Davis. Terry Gustafson, whose Meiners Oaks Sash & Door, the league's perennial low-grossing squad, fired a 35, but the former Sambaggers finished the first half of play just five points out of the cellar - a distinction held by the usually tough Bugsy's Bandits.

High points leaders for the week besides Coultas' 23 were Wallace, Jim Nelson and Steve Streich, with 22, and Lusk, gustafson and Davis, each of whom posted 21.

With half the season gone, Above Par, Bopper's Thumpers and Rhino's FFFF are assured of meeting the second-half's best teams in the annual quest for the Callender Cup, named for honorary commissioner and Soule Park mainstay, 96-year-old Eddie Callender.
