Have fun this summer at ORD
By Misty Volaski
Nothing to do over summer break?
Nonsense!
Just stop by the Ojai Recreation Department, which hosts all
kinds of activities, from skateboarding camp to teen theater
to circuit training.
The Ojai Skate Park will be open seven days a week. Free Sk8
is held Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and
Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. Classes are also available.
Throughout the summer there will also be swimming lessons at
the Nordhoff pool. Lessons begin with parent/child classes for
ages 6 months to 3 years and continue up through each age and
skill level to stroke readiness, where participants will be taught
the basics of each type of stroke. Classes are offered throughout
the day, from 9 a.m. to 6:25 p.m. The first two-week session
started Monday, but a second session will begin July 7. Each
session is $37.
For those who just want to splash around in the pool, there is
a public swim available Monday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
The cost is $2 per person entering the water.
A summer pass may be purchased, for $50 for the individual and
$100 for a family.
As always, the ORD will be hosting several summer camps. Discovery
Day Camp (for ages 5 to 8) and Survivor Camp (for ages 9 to 12)
will be held throughout the summer until Aug. 22. There are full
days ($90 a week) from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as half days
($60 a day), from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 to 6 p.m.
The drop-in daily rate for each of the camps is $25.
Also available are camps specializing in surfing, golfing, tennis,
basketball, soccer, art, science and flag football, to name a
few. See the ORD summer brochure for dates and times.
The Ojai Valley Gymnastics Club will begin a new session July
7 and runs through Aug. 8. Classes vary from tiny tumblers, for
ages 2 to 3 (parents participation required) to team (for those
who have completed all other levels). Fees depend on number of
classes per session and level.
If you want to get out of Ojai, the ORD is offering several excursions,
chaperoned by the ORD. A Skating Plus trip will be held July
2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the cost is $10 per skater. There will
also be a trip to Carpinteria beach July 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
which is also $10.
Pick up a brochure at the ORD main office, or call 646-1872 for
more information.
