Lucille Mahon Mayea
Lucille Mahon Mayea, 97, of Ojai, died
Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Ojai Valley Community Hospital after
a long illness. She was born March 9, 1906 in Santa Paula, Calif.,
to Horatio and May Ruggles Mahon.
She graduated from Santa Paula Union High School in 1923 and
attended California Commercial College in Los Angeles for a brief
period, and then returned to Santa Paula to work for the Santa
Paula Citrus Association. She then moved to Long Beach and worked
as a bank teller; following that she worked as a secretary for
the Isthmian Steamship Company. During this time, she married
Bob Evans; they were married for 10 years. Following her divorce,
she moved to Oakland to work at the Oakland Naval Hospital. More
than 6,000 amputees and frostbite cases were handled at this
hospital during the Korean War.
While in Oakland, she met and later married Air Force Major Eugene
Mayea. They moved to Roswell, N.M., and later to Van Nuys, Calif.
Upon retirement, they moved to Camarillo in Mission Hills. After
Mr. Mayea died at Mission Hills, Mrs. Mayea moved to Leisure
Village, where she cared for herself up to age 95, and then continued
to live at home with assistance for two more years.
In May of this year, she became a resident of The Gables of Ojai,
and was transferred to Ojai Valley Community Hospital and Extended
Care in late June.
Mrs. Mayea was an artist and a musician throughout her life.
She played piano and organ and painted in oils.
She is survived by her stepsons Mike, Allen and Richard Mayea;
nephews John and Robert Mahon; and niece Patricia Mahon.
The family sends special thanks to the staff at The Gables and
Ojai Valley Community Hospital for their care in her final days.
No funeral or memorial service will be held at her request; however,
the family will have a graveside service on Saturday, July 26,
at Santa Paula Cemetery. Flowers can be sent to Clausen Funeral

Grace Margaret Callahan
Grace Margaret Callahan, 88, of Ojai,
died of cancer Monday, July 14, 2003 in Ojai. She was born March
7, 1915 in Chicago, Ill., and lived in Ojai for nine years, coming
from Santa Barbara, Calif.
Miss Callahan was a librarian for the University of California
at Santa Barbara.
She is survived by her niece, Janet Cook, of Hudson, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Frank and
Charles; and sisters Gertrude, Angela and Florence Cook.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 17, 2003 from 9:30 to
10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Health and Retirement Center Chapel in
Ojai, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. with
Father Carroll Laubacher officiating. Interment will be at Calvary
Cemetery in Santa Barbara.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Health and
Retirement Center, 2426 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai, CA 93023.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home,
Ojai.

Elizabeth L. "Betts" Hall
Elizabeth L. "Betts" Hall,
78, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 after a fight with cancer.
She was surrounded by her family at her daughter's home in Oak
View. She was born May 4, 1925 in Los Angeles, Calif., and made
her home in West Hollywood for many years. She was a graduate
of the University of California at Los Angeles.
Mrs. Hall and her husband operated Bet-Mar Corporation in Hollywood
for many years.
Mrs. Hall was a longtime supporter of Children's Hospital in
Los Angeles and donated regularly to Catholic Charities. She
often rescued abandoned animals.
She is survived by her daughter Suzanne E. Cox of Thousand Oaks;
daughter and son-in-law Kathleen A. and Carl Peet of Oak View;
son and daughter-in-law Cliff and Laura Hall of West Hills; and
10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Hall, and son
Christopher John Hall.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Ventura Chapter
of the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association for their
support and care.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 24, at 11 a.m.
at Clausen Funeral Home, 316 E. Matilija St. (corner of Matilija
and Montgomery streets).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations
be made to Catholic Charities or the American Cancer Society.
