Rhinos bop Thumpers for first in Callender Cup
By Misty Volaski

The Aug. 22 sports page listed Dr. Jay's FPs as the winners of the Callender Cup, the championship that the Sundowners Golf League hosts every year. Dr. Jay's won the day's scramble, but not the cup, which took place last weekend. We apologize for the mistake.

Much like the rest of the 2003 season, the Sundowners' Callender Cup provided players with an intense day of golf at Soule Park, where the overall Sundowners League winner came away just one point in the lead.

But one point was all it took for the Rhinos FFFF, who topped the league for the championship with 1,050 points. They beat out Bopper's Thumpers, who at 1,049 points just missed first.

Coming in at third place was Above Par, whose 1,037 overall put the team far below the Boppers yet far above Ralphie's Ropers (who posted 1,028 points overall). Jerod Wallace gave Above Par a boost, posting a 69, enough to earn him 39 points. Teammate Ken Kallusky also logged 39 points off of a score of 81. Above Par took the first half of the season this year with 450 points, while the Rhinos FFFF came in first for the second half of the season with 450 points. Their gross of 483 set a new second-half gross record for the Sundowners.

The top player in the playoff was the Bopper's Jim Doyle, who with a 68, topped out the rest with 42 points. That was good enough to earn himself both lowest gross and highest points honors on the day. Posting a 69, Meiner's Oaks Sash & Door golfer Terry Gustafson wasn't far behind Doyle, snagging 40 points. Also coming close were Forrest Gumper Jay Ackerman and Rhino Matt Johnson, both of whom came back to the clubhouse with 40 points each.

Ralphie's Ropers didn't have such a great day, with no one breaking 91 and no one earning more than 37 points for the fewest points of the day (103). However, their previous scores in the first and second halves helped them to get fourth place overall in Sundowners.
The Forrest Gumps and the Scramblers tied for fifth place overall in league, though with one more point than the Scramblers, the Gumps bumped the Scramblers into sixth.
