Coach Lonnie Stanford would like to announce openings in his fifth- to eighth-grade Ojai Lightning basketball squad.
Boys and girls who would like to play on this travelling team should call Stanford at 798-1989.

California Street Longboard Championships start Sept. 13
Spectators of all ages are welcome to come watch this annual amateur surfing event. Held Sept. 13 and 14, its highlights include several age divisions, including a division named "Old Log," where contestants ride a surfboard 35 years or older without a leash or wetsuit.
There will also be a Legendary Exhibition Heat, with '50s and '60s surfing legends, such as Tom Morey, John Peck, Kemp and Danny Aberg, Tom Hale, Blinky Hubina and others, will compete in a friendly "expression session."
The event will be held at Surfer's Point, at the end of Figueroa Street in Ventura.
The public will be admitted for free to watch this growing Ventura tradition. Other entertainment will be provided, including surf films from legends such as Bud Browne, and will be held at the Ventura College Theater Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
The real Gidget, Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman, will also be in attendance to sign her re-released book which was the basis for the famous surf movie, "Gidget."
All proceeds go to benefit the Stanley's Reef Foundation.

WTT kicks off league play with Dunlop Demo Day
World Team Tennis Competition returnsthis weekend. The six-team, 36-player league features singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.
Adults start Friday at 10 a.m. and play each Saturday for 11 weeks.
Juniors also start Friday and play for 11 weeks. The junior WTT is for children registered in the Recreation Department Tennis Program, but open enrollment is available. Cost is $39 for adults and $35 for juniors.
Opening day will be Dunlop Demo Day with new rackets available to use and a chance to hit for prizes.

Relax your mind and body with
t'ai chi ch'uan
T'ai chi ch'uan is an ancient meditative martial art, which Clifton Gore will guide class participants through.
It involves slow, controlled movements, whose benefits include stress reduction and improved balance and health. Loose clothing and low-heeled shoes are recommended.
Ages 16 and up are welcome to the class, which is held at the Boyd Center Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Classes are $8 per participant.

Wildcat Golf Classic set for Oct. 3
Villanova Preparatory School will hold its annual Wildcat Golf Classic on Friday morning, Oct. 3, at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa.
Participants and sponsors will benefit the Father John Glynn, OSA, Scholarship Fund, which provides tuition assistance to students from families demonstrating financial need.
Player fee is $250 and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, gourmet lunch, goodie bag and the chance to win great prizes.
Tee sign and other sponsorships are available. To become a sponsor or reserve space for one player or a foursome, contact Heather Clopton, Villanova Development Office at 646-1464. Flier and registration information are available upon request.

Make Thursday night yoga night
Join instructor Lys Martin for an evening of yoga each Thursday night at the Boyd Center.
From 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., participants will improve their stability, strength and flexibility through gentle movement, breathing and meditation. Yoga, made popular by celebrities, is a proven way to lose weight as well as gain strength and lengthen muscles.
The cost is $10 per drop-in class for ages 16 and up.
