Ranger racket girls
top Vikings
By Misty Volaski
Unlike the Ranger football team,
Nordhoff's girls' tennis squad is dominating the court.
The team took on the Hueneme Vikings Monday and walked away with
a near shut-out, 17-1.
Nordhoff's top three singles players allowed the Vikings only
three sets total. Nathalie Selleslags packed a punch to the Hueneme
crowd, besting her opponents, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1. Emily Johnston added
scores of 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, while Tara Saylor finished off the job
by shutting out all three Hueneme singles players, 6-0, 6-0,
6-0.
Hueneme's only point came off of an NHS No. 3 doubles math played
by Katie Downey and Blair Johnston. The pair sped through their
first two games, 6-2, 6-1, but got stuck on their last game and
fell 1-6 to Vikings Ana Hernandez and Jennice Lodi.
NHS No. 1 doubles team Rachel Ward and Nicole Pettler sacked
Vikings Jakie Bettran and Joana Ferer, 6-0, then went on to thrash
Natalie Trejo and Eliza Reza, 6-1. The only Hueneme squad to
come close - Hernandez and Lodi - won just two matches to lose
6-2.
The Rangers' No. 2 doubles pair, Danica Day and Alex Paddock,
also had a good game, wielding their rackets for scores of 6-1,
6-2, 6-1.
Coach Rebecca Cook named Selleslags player of the day for her
net play, while Saylor was noted "for sweeping her macthes,"
Cook said.
Nordhoff plays cross-town rival Thacher next Wednesday at Nordhoff,
at 3 pm. Last year's matchup of the team found Thacher in the
winner's circle.
