By Misty Volaski
Thacher's girls' volleyball squad
played their first match of the year last Wednesday at home against
the Ojai Valley School Spuds. Thacher won, 3-0, by scores of
25-16, 25-13, 25-9.
Thacher was led by its only senior, setter MacKenna Chase, who
dished out 25 assists. She also had two kills, six digs and three
aces. Thacher's other leaders were junior Marguerite Kissel,
who nabbed seven kills and two blocks. Junior Becky Horton contributed
seven kills, 11 digs and three aces, while teammmate Gillian
St. John ended the game with six kills, nine digs and four aces.
Rounding out the Toads' top scorers was Emma Werlin, who had
eight digs and six aces.
"The team did a fantastic job of coming together in our
first game," said Thacher head coach Jason Burt. "We've
only had six practices. There is always a period of adjustment
to a new coach's style, system, and philosophy. We are still
creating a foundation for our program to build on."
For now, Burt said the team is rebuilding into a united group
of players.
"We're being very patient with each other and are just focusing
on working hard, having fun, and moving forward together,"
Burt enthused. "I love this part of the process."
Thacher is now 3-0, after besting Dunn, 3-0 and Ventura County
Christian, 3-1.
Thacher plays Cornerstone Chirstian today at 5:30 p.m. at the
Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo.
