Buena 'Dogs bite into Ranger tennis record
By Misty Volaski
xxxIt was Ranger against Bulldog
Wednesday afternoon in Ventura, when Nordhoff took on Buena's
girls' tennis team. Despite their strong play against Buena's
No. 1 doubles duo - each Ranger squad gained a win against them
- Nordhoff fell, 7-11.
Lady Ranger co-captain and No. 1 singles player Emily Johnston
defeated Buena's Kristine Brown, 6-1, and Morgan Harvey 6-0.
Johnston went on to lose to Bulldog No. 2 racketeer Leslie Tong,
4-6.
Nordhoff's second singles player, Nathalie Selleslags, retaliated
against Tong, 6-3. However it was to be her only victory of
the day; Selleslags lost to Harvey, 4-6, and later, to Brown,
6-7.
Rachel Ward had a tough day against the much-bigger school, also
falling to 'Dog Harvey, 4-6, Brown, 3-6, and Tong (2) 3-6. "Ward
stayed strong through all three sets," said Nordhoff head
coach Rebecca Cook.
Tara Saylor and co-captain Danica Day bested two of their three
matches of the day. They defeated Buena's first doubles, Bonnie
Parsons and Kate Wilson, 6-3, and second doubles team, Emily
Bradvira and Lindsey Whitaker, 6-3. Saylor and Day lost their
flair against Buena's No. 3 doubles duo, Hilary Schuster and
Alicia Velo, losing, 3-6.
Nicole Petler
and Alex Paddock also added a win to Nordhoff's scoreboard against
Buena's No. 1 doubles team, 6-1, but lost their second and third
matches, 1-6, 3-6.
"Petler had excellent vollies," said Cook.
No. 3 doubles for Nordhoff - Blair Johnston and Perry Johnson
- lost to Buena's second and third doubles teams, 2-6 and 3-6,
but came back to beat first doubles Parsons and Wilson 6-3.
The Lady Ranger tennis crew plays today at home against Buena's
cross-town rival, Venutra High.
Games start at 3 p.m. at the Nordhoff courts.
