Slump Busters take Turkey Trot Softball Tourney
By Missy Hinks
After the turkey was eaten and
friends and family gathered for the holiday, the Ojai Recreation
Department held its annual Turkey Trot Tournament. Some of the
top talent for the county gathered on Saturday at the Sarzotti
Park fields for a day of fun and competitive softball.
Six teams entered the tournament, with only one team - the Slump
Busters - going undefeated. The Oak View Outlaws gave the Busters
their only scare of the tournament, coming within one run of
a victory. The Slump Busters breezed through their next two games
to advance to the final for the trophy - and new bat bags.
Matched up against Hit it or Miss it, the Busters hit the stuffing
out of the ball with Dave Arroyo, Noah Lowry, John Pahler and
Rob Verastion powering home runs for the Busters. Hit It or Miss
It matched runs with the Slump Busters for the first three innings
to keep the score even at 8-8. In the top of the fourth SB made
their move and drove in six runs. Nick Cruz doubled and scored
for Hit It in the bottom of four, leaving SB up by five. In the
top of five the with the Busters at bat, Arroyo homered, only
to be matched by teammate Lowry, for two runs in the inning.
Down by seven, team Hit It rallied with three runs, helped out
by the doubling Steven Torres, to bring Hit It within four.
Hit It gained one more in the bottom of six, before the Slump
Busters lived up to their name, scoring 12 runs in the top of
seven.
The Slump Busters walked away with the first place trophy and
bat bags. The final score was Slump Busters 33, Hit it or Miss
it 19. The top batters in the final game were:
Slump Busters:
· Noah Lowry, San Francisco Giants relief pitcher and
Ojai resident, was a perfect five for five with a sacrifice,
two singles, a double, and two right center home runs and seven
RBIs.
· Dave Arroyo also batted perfectly, going four for four
with a double, two triples, and a home run with four RBIs.
· Rob Verastion batted a double and slammed two home runs
to bring in seven Busters.
Hit It or Miss It:
· Steven Torres batted two doubles and a triple, and also
had three RBIs.
· Rudy Torres smacked two singles and a double.
